History

In 2013, the Department of English began its journey as the only department under the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. In keeping with the progress of the modern world, English holds special significance as a medium of communication. Considering the importance of English language proficiency in acquiring knowledge in science and technology, English language courses have been made compulsory for students of all other departments of the university. From the very beginning, the Department of English has been conducting these courses. Furthermore, the rich tradition of English literature has profoundly enriched human life in various ways. In this context, the department offers courses in both English language and literature.

However, the activities of the Department of English are not confined merely to language and literary studies. Alongside regular academic programs, the department engages in various supportive educational activities. In addition to the continuous effort to acquire and generate new knowledge through research, the department regularly undertakes initiatives to develop students' humanitarian values, social awareness, and leadership skills.

Under this faculty, three types of courses are currently being offered: a four-year (eight-semester) Bachelor (Honors) program, a one-year (two-semester) Master's program, and a one/two-semester Communicative English course (for all other departments of the university). All these courses are conducted by the faculty members of the Department of English.

As an additional responsibility, Dr. A. M. Swaraj, Assistant Professor of the GEBT Department, served as the first Chair of the Department of English. Later, the then Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Dr. Md. Abdus Sattar, took over the responsibility of the Chair. Currently, Dr. Md. Abdullah Al Mamun is serving as the Chairman of the Department. Currently, there are eighteen faculty members working in the department, and about 200 students from five batches are enrolled.

To foster the humanitarian qualities, skills, and creativity of its students, the department has launched a platform named “Joyjatra.” Through this platform, various co-curricular and extracurricular activities are actively pursued, including debate and recitation competitions, stage drama performances, language contests, wall magazine creation, photography, reading, music practice, and film screenings.

Use of Digital Media as an Educational Tool

To make the courses more comprehensible and engaging for students, course-based groups are created on digital media, which are also used to enhance the quality of education.
