The first literary adda or literary chatting session started with Rabindranath Tagore’s short stories ‘Kabuliwalah' and ‘Khokababur Protyawartan'. The adda was organized by Rhythm, activity and the cultural club of the Department. This literary session was intended to help the students form the habit of reading books for pleasure and passion. Munibur Rahman, Marium Jamila, Associate Professor, Abdullah AL Mamun, Assistant Professor, Sharmin Sultana, Assistant Professor, and Tabassum Islam Nabanee, Lecturer, and the students from the first year to the Master’s spontaneously took part in the adda.
The first literary discussion of this year started at around 2 pm and went on up until 4 pm. The formal discussion, as intended, gradually turned into a casual bilingual adda as the teachers and students started sharing their views on the stories in a fervid and friendly manner. Through spontaneous participation, the essence of the stories unfolded gradually and built a comparative connection between the present society and the erstwhile one. A special part of the talk was on the biography and philosophy of Rabindranath Tagore.
It was unanimously decided to arrange such literary discussions fortnightly. Chokher Bali, a famous novel by Rabindranath Thakur was selected for the next discussion.
According to Abdullah AL Mamun, an Assistant Professor of the Department of English and also the organizer of this adda, making students book-oriented and improving their mindset by going beyond traditional and institutional education, was the main objective of the literary adda. He also said despite a hiatus in regular academic activities of long two years due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, the active and enthusiastic participation of the students inspired him to organize events like this one regularly. The adda was moderated by Disha Priya Mishti, a third-year student of the Department.
